Preparing for the Unexpected

“Uncertainty” is a common word we hear about the world we live in these days. As both an athlete and a person some other words may come to mind such as “fear, sadness, and challenge”. It is completely normal to have these feelings during these times our world faces, however a positive and healthy mindset can be a great defence to these unsettling thoughts and feelings. Here are a few aspects to utilize on a daily basis to stay prepared and well during these uncertain times:

  • Positive Mindset – Although it seems that life as we know it has been turned on its head, take time to reflect on the positive aspects in your life and what you are grateful for. While it is a challenging task to be the positive person in the room at this time it may not only benefit yourself but those around you as well. Positivity and grace are two aspects that can have a major impact on someone else, along with allowing yourself to focus on the good as opposed to the negative areas of life.

  • Flexibility – As an athlete during these uncertain times it is unknown what your sport will look like in a week, a month, or when the season is supposed to start. To the best of your ability try to be flexible and adapt to the ever-changing climate in both life and in sport. Having a flexible approach as opposed to having your heart set on things being a certain way will allow you to embrace change and be better prepared for what comes your way.

  • Preparation Level – As it is uncertain when the hockey season will start or what it will look like it is important for athletes to stay prepared. Whether you have the ability to get on the ice or train off ice it is critical to stay prepared and be ready. At a minimum putting in hard work and being prepared will have positive physical and mental health benefits.
